Converting Your Generator for Home Use

Lowering Your Electric Bill - A Gas Generator Can't Do That!

If you experience frequent power outages or your area is susceptible severe weather, a transfer switch can help you safely power your home or business using a portable solar generator. Portable solar generators can provide comfort, safety and security during power outages and emergencies, and can be installed temporarily during these situations by using exterior grade exntension cords. For a semi-permanent solution, a portable solar generator can be properly connected to your home in such a fashion to protect electrical utility workers, family members and property. Improper connection of your portable generator and transfer switch can pose a risk of electric shock, cause a fire hazard and can void your homeowner's insurance in case of accident or injury.

A manual transfer switch is recommended for connection of a portable solar generator to ensure safe and convenient operation. By isolating those circuits using solar generator power, a transfer switch eliminates the risk of backfeeding the electrical utility, which can cause injury to workers and property damage. A transfer switch is also safer than running extension cords from your solar generator into your home, and easier to operate.

By installing a transfer switch at the breaker box and connecting a portable solar generator to the transfer switch, you can run selected circuits for appliances such as a furnace, refrigerator, microwave, television, stero, computer, or lighting during a power outage, depending on the capacity of your solar generator.

Determining which circuits you will require during a power outage is the first step in selecting the proper wattage solar generator and transfer switch. Since most home appliances operate intermittently, a solar system in the range of 2,000 to 3,600 watts can provide adequate power to circuits for the most often used appliances and lighting.

Use our Power Calculator to help you determine the wattage you will need to supply through a transfer switch from your solar generator.

When you order your solar generator from North Star Energy Services, be sure to add the Transfer Switch Tie-In option. This package includes a manual transfer switch in the generator to switch power output from the standard 3 prong (type B) receptacles to a locking marine grade receptacle. The package also includes a marine grade cordset. Simply have a matching receptacle installed on the transfer switch next to your main breaker box, and plug it in. If you properly size the circuits on the transfer switch to the solar generator, you can run these circuits on a full-time basis from the solar generator, lowering your use of power from the utility and saving you money.
